Section E22. Bilateral Military Defence Treaties: China’s Treaties and USA Treaties

This section covers only Bilateral Military Defence Treaties with a Commitment to Defend in the Case of an Attack excluding Bilateral Military Defence Treaties that are covered under Multilateral Military Defence Treaties, such as the old Bilateral Military Defence Treaties between the UK and Portugal or between the USA and Canada, which both have become less relevant under NATO because UK/Portugal and USA/Canada are members of NATO.

E22.1 China’s Bilateral Military Defence Treaties

China as a Superpower Lacks Formal Membership in Multilateral Military Defence Treaties like Russia and USA, still, China has a few Bilateral Military Defence Treaties with strong countries, which give her sufficient military backup in the case of an attack against her. E22.2 USA’s Bilateral Military Defence Treaties

The USA has numerous Bilateral Military Support Treaties with many countries without the Commitment to Defend in the Case of Attack (e.g. Philippines, Israel, South Korea, and Pakistan). Although, currently, the USA has only one RELEVANT single Military Defence Treaty with Japan under the commitment to defend in the case of attack, still, this treaty is a ‘One Direction Treaty’, namely only the USA has the commitment to defend Japan in the case of an attack, while Japan has not any commitment to defend USA in the case of an attack against USA. Note, the USA has additional Bilateral Military Defence Treaties, such as the USA-Canada Defence Treaty, but these treaties are covered under NATO, so as long as NATO is an active treaty, these treaties are less RELEVANT.
